Although you're mostly going to find FMJ ammo for target shooting, several manufacturers do offer varmint and deer hunting rounds. That said, you're still going to find more 30-30 hunting ammo. On the flip side, Russian-made steel-cased 7.62×39 ammo makes plinking and casual target shooting extremely affordable. The AK-47 gobbles magnetic. Drops deer and goats cleanly. I have killed a half dozen deer with the cartridge and the bullet always mushrooms and fragments. Not bad for surplus $7 a box ammo. However, the 7.62x39mm cartridge has a larger rim diameter (.447″ vs.378″) and uses larger diameter bullets (.310″ vs.224″).That being said, the larger rim diameter of the 7.62x39mm is offset somewhat by the longer and less tapered case of the 5.56x45mm NATO. For that reason, two cartridges have almost the same case capacity.
